Chatcove vs iMazing, after iMazing went subscription-only
In June 2025 iMazing retired its one-time licence. If that is why you are here, this page compares the two fairly, including the several things iMazing still does better than we do.
Short answer
If you only need your WhatsApp history from an iPhone on a Mac or a Windows PC, Chatcove does that for $9 once on up to 2 devices, Mac or Windows, while iMazing now costs $29.99 a year for 1 device. If you need a full device manager or an Intel Mac, iMazing is still the better choice.
Let us start with the disclosure, because everything below is easier to judge with it in mind: we make Chatcove. We have tried to write the comparison we would want to read if we were the ones shopping, which means conceding the points we lose.
What actually changed
iMazing used to sell a perpetual licence. It does not any more, and this is not an inference, it is on their own licensing policy page:
“In June 2025, we discontinued the device license and now only offer subscriptions.”
Their reasoning, published on their blog, is worth quoting too, because it is a genuinely interesting argument: they said that most one-time licences in this industry are “effectively subscriptions in disguise, often limited by update cutoffs or feature restrictions.”
They are not wrong about the industry. Plenty of “lifetime” licences in this category quietly mean “until the next major version.” We just draw the opposite conclusion from the same observation. If dishonest one-time licences are the problem, the answer is an honest one-time licence, not a subscription.
The prices
| App | Cheapest Mac price | Model |
|---|---|---|
| ChatcoveMac (Apple Silicon) and Windows | $9 | One time, 2 devices |
| iMazingMac (Intel and Apple Silicon) and Windows | $29.99 a year | Subscription only, 1 device ($49.99 for 5) |
iMazing's price read on its own store on 8 October 2026, in US dollars before tax. All trademarks belong to their owners.
One number worth putting plainly: even on its cheapest plan, one device at $29.99 a year, iMazing costs more in its first four months than Chatcove costs ever.
What iMazing costs, and what is free
iMazing now sells only yearly subscriptions: $29.99 for 1 device, $49.99 for 5 and $89.99 for 20 on the Personal plan, with Business plans priced by device slot. Its free version is a real trial, but its own FAQ caps WhatsApp at 25 items, which is enough to see how it works and not enough to save a chat history. Every plan, the Business prices and the trial limits are on our iMazing pricing page, with sources.
Where iMazing is genuinely better
This is the part most comparison pages skip. iMazing is a mature, serious piece of software and there are real reasons to choose it.
- It does vastly more. Full device backups, photo and music transfer, app management, ringtones, filesystem access, device supervision, configuration profiles. Chatcove exports chat history. That is the entire feature list.
- It runs on Intel Macs. Both apps run on Windows, but on a Mac Chatcove is Apple Silicon only, on macOS 12 Monterey or later. If you are on an Intel Mac or macOS 11 or earlier, this comparison ends here and iMazing wins by default.
- It covers more messaging apps. iMessage, WhatsApp, Viber, WeChat, Skype and more. Chatcove does WhatsApp. iMessage is planned, nothing else is.
- It has years of track record. We shipped our first public build in September 2026. That is a real difference and you should weigh it.
- More devices if you pay for them. Its Personal plans go up to 20 devices a year. If you are managing a family's worth of phones, that matters.
Where we think we are better
- Price and model. $9 once for 2 devices, Mac or Windows, against $29.99 a year for 1 device. Saving your chat history is a job most people do when they change phones. We do not think that should be a recurring bill.
- You see everything before you pay. Install Chatcove, connect your iPhone, let it make the encrypted backup, and read your entire history with every photo and voice note, for free, and try up to 3 exports. Payment unlocks unlimited exporting. The most common complaint we found about tools in this category is discovering the price only after a long processing step, and this is the direct answer to it.
- Right-to-left languages render correctly. In the app and in the exported file. If you have ever exported an RTL conversation from any tool in this category you will know that reversed lines and misplaced punctuation are the norm. This one is worth checking yourself on your own data, for free, before you pay us anything.
- No account, and no server for your chats. Chatcove has no backend for your chats, and the backup, browsing and exporting all work with the network disconnected. The only automatic network calls are an update check and a licence check, which registers your computer when you activate and lets it work offline for up to 21 days between re-checks. Neither carries any chat content, and nothing else leaves your computer unless you choose to send us a problem report.
- One job. No device manager to learn. Open it, connect the phone, read, export.
How to try both without spending anything
- Download Chatcove and let it back up and open your history. Free, no account, and you will know within a few minutes whether your data looks right.
- If the export is what you want, it is $9 once. If it is not, you have lost nothing but the time.
- If you need any of the device-management features above, go to iMazing. They have a trial too.
Common questions
Did iMazing really stop selling a one-time licence?
Yes. iMazing's own licensing policy page states that in June 2025 it discontinued the device licence and now offers subscriptions only. The perpetual Personal Device License is listed as deprecated.
Is Chatcove a full replacement for iMazing?
No, and it is not trying to be. iMazing is a whole device manager covering backups, photos, music, ringtones, app management and supervision. Chatcove does one job: getting your WhatsApp history onto your Mac or PC. If you need the rest, iMazing is the better tool.
What does Chatcove cost?
$9 once, for up to 2 devices, Mac or Windows. There is no subscription and no account. Browsing your entire WhatsApp history is free, and so are 3 trial exports of one chat each; you pay to export everything.
How much does iMazing cost?
On iMazing's own store on 8 October 2026, the Personal subscription was $29.99 a year for 1 device, $49.99 for 5 and $89.99 for 20, before tax, renewed yearly. There is no one-time licence any more. Our iMazing pricing page lists every plan, including Business, and what the free version does.
Does Chatcove work on Windows and on Intel Macs?
On Windows, yes: Chatcove runs on Windows 10 22H2 or later (x64), as iMazing does. On Intel Macs, not yet: on a Mac it requires Apple Silicon (M1 or later) running macOS 12 Monterey or later. iMazing supports Intel Macs.
