Export a WhatsApp chat to PDF, with the photos and voice notes still in it
WhatsApp's own export gives you a text file and a folder of loose attachments. If you want a document that reads like the conversation actually looked, you need a different route. Here is what that involves and where it falls short.

Why the built-in export cannot give you this
WhatsApp's Export Chat produces a .txt file. If you choose to attach media, you get a folder of files next to it, named things like IMG-20240612-WA0007.jpg, referenced from the text by filename.
That is fine as a data dump and useless as a document. Nothing places the photo where it was sent, and the amount of media included is capped by the size of the export, so a long conversation loses most of it anyway.
What you actually need
To produce a PDF that reads like the conversation, something has to read the underlying message database from an encrypted iPhone backup, re-attach each media file to the message it belongs to, lay the whole thing out, and then print it. The steps that matter:
- An encrypted backup. WhatsApp's history is only included in an iPhone backup when encryption is switched on. There is no way around this and any tool doing this job will ask for it.
- Re-associating the media. The database references attachments by path. Thousands of files have to be matched back to the right messages.
- Layout, then print. The conversation is rendered as a document, then printed to PDF.
Choose the format for the job
- PDF when it needs to be printed, filed, emailed as one object, or handed to someone. It is fixed and it looks the same everywhere.
- HTML when you want to keep it. Media stays playable, including voice notes, it opens in any browser, and it will still open in ten years without special software. For personal archiving this is usually the better answer, and people reach for PDF out of habit.

Two things worth checking before you rely on the file
- Open it and read it. Confirm timestamps and sender names are present and that the media you expected is actually there. Whatever tool you use, look at the output before you delete anything from your phone.
- Size. Years of photos can produce a document thousands of pages long. A date range is usually more useful than the whole history, and easier to open.
Common questions
Can WhatsApp export a chat directly as a PDF?
