How to back up WhatsApp on an iPhone without iCloud
If iCloud is full and WhatsApp is refusing to back up, or if you simply do not want your chat history sitting in someone else's cloud, this is what to do instead.

Why WhatsApp keeps filling up iCloud
What people miss is that WhatsApp does two different things with iCloud, and only one of them is obvious.
- Your regular iPhone iCloud backup includes WhatsApp, because it includes everything on the phone. This is what fills first.
- WhatsApp's own separate iCloud backup sits on top, and it is enabled by default. It grows with every photo and video anyone sends you. You can see it in the phone's Settings under iCloud storage as its own line item, and it is often the single largest thing there.
You can switch WhatsApp's iCloud backup off from inside WhatsApp itself (Settings, Chats, Backup). Once it is off, WhatsApp stops adding to iCloud. It also stops adding to any backup, which means the next time you switch phones, or the phone is lost or stolen, your history goes with it. You need a different backup.
The alternative: an encrypted local backup to your Mac
Your Mac can make a complete backup of the iPhone over a cable. When that backup is encrypted, it includes your WhatsApp history in full: the messages, the photos, the videos, the voice notes. It is the same mechanism Apple has always shipped. It does not use iCloud, does not need a subscription, and does not send anything anywhere.
The one cost is disk space. The backup is roughly the size of what WhatsApp reports for itself on the phone.
Two ways to make it
Free, using Finder
- Plug the iPhone into the Mac and unlock it.
- Open Finder and select the iPhone in the sidebar.
- Under General, choose Back up all of the data on your iPhone to this Mac.
- Tick Encrypt local backup and set a password. This step is not optional for what we are doing here. WhatsApp's history is only included when the backup is encrypted, and macOS will not include it otherwise.
- Click Back Up Now.
You now have a complete, private, encrypted backup of your iPhone on your Mac, and it contains your WhatsApp history. If iCloud was the problem, you can stop here and turn WhatsApp's iCloud backup off with a clear conscience.
With Chatcove, if you want to read it too

A note on WhatsApp's own Chat Transfer
WhatsApp has a built-in Chat Transfer that moves your history to a new iPhone directly, without iCloud. It works, and it is the right tool if all you want is your history on the new phone. It does not leave you a copy on your computer, and it is no help at all if the old phone is already gone.
Common questions
Can I back up WhatsApp on an iPhone without using iCloud?
Yes. WhatsApp's data is included in the standard iPhone backup whenever the backup is encrypted, and that backup can be made locally to a Mac. iCloud is not required.
Why is WhatsApp using so much of my iCloud storage?
WhatsApp maintains its own separate iCloud backup on top of the iPhone's own iCloud backup, and it grows with your media. It shows up in Settings under WhatsApp storage. Turning it off stops the growth; you then need another way to keep your history safe.
Will a local encrypted backup include my photos and voice notes?
Yes. An encrypted iPhone backup contains the full WhatsApp media directory. That is what allows a desktop tool to render the conversation with images and playable audio in place.
How large will the backup be?
Roughly the same size WhatsApp shows in its own storage view on the phone. Years of shared media can easily run tens of gigabytes, so plan the disk space before you start.
Do I still get the messages on a new iPhone this way?
The local backup is for reading and archiving on the Mac. Moving history to a new iPhone is a separate WhatsApp feature (Chat Transfer) and does not depend on either kind of backup.
